Talking about life insurance, new research published in the online journal Aging suggests that it is people who look on the bright side of life who live longest having the best life insurance.
American scientists studied 243 people over the age of 100, and found that most of them were sociable, cheerful and outgoing. The researchers have suggested that genetics may partly be responsible for these positive personality traits.
Nir Barzilai, the lead scientist on the study and director of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine's Institute for Aging Research in New York, said that originally it was assumed that centenarians would owe their long life partly to being "mean and ornery". However, they found the opposite was true and most were "outgoing, optimistic and easygoing", saw laughter as important and had a large social group. They also expressed their emotions openly.
The study came as part of the Longevity Genes Project, which is looking at 500 Ashkenazi Jews over the age of 95 and 700 of their children. Ashkenazi Jews are a good subject for studying genes as they are genetically similar.
Tests on this group - with an average age of 97.6 and 75 per cent women - rated lower on "neurotic personality" scores than a sample of general population, while their ratings for being conscientious were higher, So we have to look on the bright side of life for best life insurance as well as low cost life insurance.
